The opportunities and challenges of scaling up renewable energy generation.
During this event, we will bring together experts to explore the opportunities and challenges of scaling up renewable energy generation, and associated infrastructure in support of the Government’s ambition to make the UK a clean energy superpower by 2030.
In particular, we will consider the impact of renewable energy infrastructure on rural areas and consider what a balanced approach to deploying renewables at scale could look like. Now is an important time to have this debate to ensure an equitable transition and that communities are brought with us on this journey, to minimise the rise of Net Zero scepticism and misinformation spreading.
Confirmed speakers include Cllr Richard Clewer, Leader of Wiltshire Council and Ollie Pendered, Chief Executive of Community Energy South.
The event will present opportunities to learn about and discuss:
- The patterns of centralisation of large-scale renewable energy generation sites, from the national to local level.
- How to robustly assess the cumulative impacts of a proposed site, going through development management, on a given area. Including what the scope of a ‘cumulative impact’ assessment should cover
- The opportunities to proactively mitigate challenges associated with cumulative impact arising in the first place through i) Local Area Energy Planning, ii) Community engagement, and iii) Community Benefits schemes.
